I remember driving down the road one Friday afternoon, headed home, thinking about how I was going to pay the bills that week. To everyone on the outside looking in, I had arrived with the American Dream. I had a large, three-story brick home, two cars, real estate, and looked like I was doing well. What most people didn't realize is that I was really living paycheck-to-paycheck on a very large scale. I had convinced myself that, in order to be wealthy, I had to look wealthy—even if I was broke.

Many things in our childhoods sculpt the way we act—and many of the behaviors we have—in adulthood. I remember as a kid thinking that, when I got older, I was going to live a certain type of life. I went to college, graduated, got my master's degree, and started my career. As my career progressed, my debt progressed, not incrementally, but almost at a three-to-one rate. I also remember thinking that having real estate would help me create wealth, so I started borrowing money on leveraged real estate. Little did I know, leveraged real estate is one of the quickest ways to go broke.

I'm writing this book to help people who have had that moment—or are having that moment right now. Maybe you feel overwhelmed with debt, at the end of your rope, like you don't have enough means to make it work every month, frustrated, and/or depressed because your bills far outweigh your income. This book is really for you. It's to help you not only identify some issues, but also a way out of them.

I will tell you—in advance—that it's easy to get in debt but difficult to create the path and journey out of debt. I will also tell you, however, it is very freeing and liberating when your income becomes yours and not your debt holders’. So many times we don't believe there's a way out. That’s why I want to explain in these pages how I got out of debt and now live as a debt-free millionaire—to show you there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
